Our Boys' Families

It’s hard to beat the precious moments of having sons and their wives and children visit at the same time.  Willy and Deanna took them to some familiar sights and they were all together for Deanna's 65th.  There were times when three generations were riding on the same wave.  Willy and Deanna also went to Colorado to visit Kirk’s family.

Mediterranean

Willy and Deanna went on a cruise starting in Lisbon, then to Gibraltar, five places in Spain, including Mallorca, Ibiza, Sevilla, Motril and Barcelona. They also visited Nice, France, then Florence, Naples, Pompeii, and spent 5 days in Rome.  They saw many major sights, including museums, castles, cathedrals, and ancient ruins.

Africa

Willy and Deanna spent a week in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. They also spent time in Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Not only did they get to go on Safaris by boat and by dirt roads in the bush but were able to get in the water at the edge of the world’s largest waterfall.  This trip gets their strongest recommendations.  Where they went was safe, cheap, friendly and unique.  A few feet right outside the entrance to their hotel in town were a variety of animals including Baboons, Warthogs, an Elephant and Cape Buffalo.  The overall hotel experience was Willy’s all-time favorite. We had a nice lunch outside London with long-time friend Lisa and her family on the way to Africa.

Asia

Willy and Deanna took a cruise that started in Taipei, Taiwan; and went to Hong Kong, Coron and Palawan, Philippines; Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia; Muara, Brunei; Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam; Bangkok and Koh Samui, Thailand; and Singapore.  They stayed a couple days in Taipei, and Singapore at the beginning and end of the cruise.  They went by boat to Batam, Indonesia from Singapore for lunch.  The snorkeling was exceptional in the Philippines.  They needed more days in the Thailand stops, as there was much to see.  The food was wonderful in all of the places, and very inexpensive everywhere.  Singapore exceeded expectations as it was very modern, clean and safe.  The Changi airport is a must see with its indoor waterfall and interesting architecture and other attractions.  They recommend an intentional long layover there.

Ohio

Willy went to central Ohio for his 50th High School class reunion.  While there he visited with family and friends.  Thanks again to Rob and Becky for hosting his stay. Willy was delighted to reconnect with many from his past.  Willy saw Steve Pinkston for the first time in 50 years.  The last time he saw Steve was when Steve found Willy lying in the middle of the road at nighttime following an accident on his motorcycle.  Willy visited Uncle Don, Aunt Eileen and Cousin Tina.  Willy visited Hope Wilcoxen at age 99.  Hope did not remember him until he mentioned when she had visited him in Hawaii during his Navy days.

Surfing

Willy teaches surfing regularly.  Every Saturday morning from 7am to 9am, people come to surf or to learn how.  Willy has now passed 4 years and 5 months without missing catching at least one wave every day unless he is off island. Many days he does several sessions.  He is on the water before sunrise most days with friends.

Willy, now a third-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, teaches regularly on Saturday morning at 0930, and at other times through the week. Willy trained with world champion Marcelo Garcia this year. Chad has returned to the mat to train with Declan. Kirk was awarded his Brown Belt, and trains with Hudson and Brooklyn. Declan, Hudson and Brooklyn have been competing. Congratulations to Quentin on achieving Black Belt.

Fishing & Boating

On some of our low wind days, Willy takes people out to fish.  This year, Pete helped bring in a 33 pound Wahoo (also called Ono).  We were fortunate to get the Wahoo in the boat before the shark that was following it decided to take its tax.

Hawaii Life

Below are activities, sights and gatherings on island.  Willy and Deanna love that people stop by daily to visit, surf, or play.  Willy and Deanna enjoy getting to know visiting families of their friends.  Willy's mom, Dorothy lives nearby, and Willy and Deanna see her almost every day.
